Week Three Social Listening
Callaway Golf has mostly good reviews on social media. On Instagram, a lot of people talk about how nice their new products look and how they wish they could have them. For example, when a new driver comes out and Callaway posts about it, people will be talking about how clean the design is, or about how they would buy it if they could afford it. Callaway is very interesting to me because I love golf and I know a lot of golf clubs, I even have a few Callaway clubs in my golf bag currently. Callaway's Value proposition is to make high-quality golf products at a premium price, they consider themselves the best of the best and strive to make products that fit their standard.
In a recent post, where Callaway released pictures of their new mini driver. The top comment was "Why do everything TaylorMade does? Come on y'all be ahead of the curve." (@thomasbarnesgolf). This comment does not make a whole lot of sense because Callaway has been making them for years and they were even one of the first companies to make one. Another comment that stood out to me was on a post revealing, a new blacked-out iron set. The comment says, "I wish you would make limited edition for the lefty's that love your products" (@baughnasuarsrex) This is a comment that I have seen a lot of, people are complaining that they don't release enough limited edition clubs in the left hand, they only make them in right hand instead. So this is a very valid complaint in my opinion, why make something that not everyone can use? They are losing a lot of potential sales by doing this. The last comment that stood out to me was in a post about a collaboration with another brand and its chrome soft balls. The comment says "These are awesome. Need these in the bag." (@tucsontees). He is showing his love for this new design as he is probably a fan of both of the brands working together on this product.
With these posts about new products that are being released, Callaway is trying to bring in as many people as possible to buy their product, they do this by taking very detailed pictures of all the products. They also do a lot of giveaways which is great for them because to enter the giveaways you often have to repost the brand or comment, or tag people in the comments. By doing this, Callaway is getting thousands of views and shares and in return all they have to give up is a very product from their line. The customers are happy because they get a chance to get a free golf club at no cost and the company gets lots of views.
The company did not respond to any of the comments. They are a big enough company that they don't usually respond to any of the comments except for maybe one or two on occasion. It is probably better for them to not respond because chances are, not everyone is going to like what they have to say so instead of risking the idea of making a potential customer angry, they just say nothing to be safe.
If I was in charge of Callaway's social media, I would respond to more comments, customer engagement is very important and makes people more interested in commenting on a post if they think there is a chance that Callaway would respond to them. Although I would only comment on something that I am almost positive won't be taken in the wrong way by anyone.
After doing this assignment
I learned that Callaway gets much more positive comments than I thought. Instagram is a very negative place that is always full of hateful comments, so it was nice to see a comment section that was mostly positive with people almost all on the same page. Even though I did two examples of negative comments, for the most part, they were all very positive.
